Geek Knits: Kyle Cassidy and Jennifer Shahade photo shoot

These have been sitting on YouTube for a long time, but we can finally publish them. As with the Rodney Anonymous photo shoot, Kyle was shooting photos for an upcoming book by Joan of Dark titled Geek Knits: Over 30 Projects for Fantasy Fanatics, Science Fiction Fiends, and Knitting Nerds, due out in early June. It’s a collection of knitting patterns that SF and fantasy fans would definitely Be Into, and thanks to Kyle, they’re modelled by some truly impressive people: Rodney Anonymous, Adam Savage, René Aberjonois, and Joel Hodgson. (I got invited to help with the Hodgson photo shoot, but we didn’t do video.)

Our model on this VERY cold day (nine degrees, plus or minus two) was Jennifer Shahade, chess Grand Master and games journalist, who put up with some clumsy costumes and bitter freezing environments to pose in Cobbs Creek while Kyle got some excellent photos and I clumsily followed everyone with a camera and mike teetering on my monopod.

There are three versions. I did the first cut mainly because we had no idea what to do with the video beyond showing Joan of Dark how things were coming along. So it’s sort of a home movie. (There’s also not much I can say about that day, because it’s all pretty much in the video.) Kyle wanted a three-minute version, and maybe I’ll get it down to that, but right now the draft’s at six minutes.

The REALLY SHORT version (< 6 mins)

The LONG version (18 mins)
